When Vital Proteins approached me last Spring about collaborating on a brand-new product for the Paleo community, I saw an amazing chance to answer the question “what protein powder do you recommend?” While I love and have used Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides for years, I wanted something that was even more nutrient-dense and veggie-focused (see Why Are Veggies Crucial on the AIP, The Importance of Vegetables and The Importance of Nutrient Density).
It had to pack in a ton of whole veggies (fiber and all), just enough fruit to balance the bitterness of the veggies and add some vital nutrients, and a full 20 grams of protein from collagen peptides. It had to be palatable, portable, easy to mix without a blender and totally AIP. I knew this product would help so many of you who want to pack more veggies into your daily routine, because the more veggies, the better.
We now believe that 8 servings of veggies and fruit per day is the bare minimum for the lowest risk of chronic disease, but the AIP prescribes more like 10 to 14 servings per day to maximize the health benefits from veggies and fruit. And those benefits are pretty amazing! Vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidant anticancer phytochemicals—they’re the best source of so many nutrients and benefit our health in amazing ways (see The Importance of Vegetables, The Amazing World of Plant Phytochemicals: Why a diet rich in veggies is so important! and The Fiber Manifesto Part 1 of 5: What Is Fiber and Why Is it Good?). Fruit is a close second in terms of nutrient density!
And the feedback I’ve gotten since releasing Dr. Sarah Ballantyne’s Collagen Veggie Blend a couple months ago has been overwhelmingly amazing! You all are finding so many creative ways to fit this product into your routine, pack in 3 servings of veggies and make nutrient density a priority!
“As soon as I opened the tub I noticed the lovely smell of the powder. Something light, earthy, with a hint of sweetness. Things were off to a good start! For my first taste, I simply mixed the collagen veggie blend with some water. I know The Paleo Mom does this, but it is not for me. Next, I tried it with some other goodies (fresh fruit for bulk) and bingo! I slurped the whole thing down in a flash and was left feeling nourished and satiated for hours. I didn’t experience any sugar crash from the fruit and that’s because each serving contains also a healthy dose of proteins.” – Sophie, A Squirrel in the Kitchen. “It’s pure fruits and veggies. It’s potent, for sure! But I have thrown it in a few smoothies now and couldn’t even make it out! My kids didn’t notice either, which is always the biggest test. I am excited to continue to play around with these greens in different recipes. With 21 g protein, and 6 g of fiber in every serving, I am sold. They are also Whole30 approved, for those interested in that.” – Kels, Simple Life by Kels. Check out Kels full review & her banana & pineapple smoothie recipe!
“Seriously! I’m always looking for creative ways to sneak in the good stuff – I mean steamed broccoli is great and all but let’s be honest it can be snooze central for those of us who like a little more excitement in our lives. This product is a blend of fruits, veggies, and collagen for a powder that is super nutrient dense and has countless great nutritional qualities. The catch is, this one does dissolve well, but is not flavorless. While my husband swears that he would put this powder into water and slurp it right up, I’m not entirely on board with that idea as it can be a bit tart. I’ve found a way to sneak this one into these Superpower Gummies so that you can pop a few at a time throughout the day and get all those benefits too!” – Jennifer, Predominantly Paleo. “What makes this such a great product is that you can throw it in to soups and smoothies and get a significant boost of nutrients without having to do much (other than remembering to add it!) Really, the only downside of this particular blend is that it’s not yet available in stores here in Australia or across the ditch in New Zealand. Instead, you’ll need to order it direct from Vital Proteins” – Joanna, Joanna Frankham Holistic Wellness. Check out Joanna’s full review & pear smoothie recipe!
“Convenience snacks are usually all protein, all fruit, or grain-y sugar bombs that leave little to be desired when it comes to nutrients. So, that’s why I created these collagen veggie fat bombs! They’re AIP, paleo, and full of healthy goodness. So, how do you get veggies into a little fat bomb like this? Since I’m not going to add raw spinach to a fat ball, I used the Collagen Veggie Blend from Vital Protein’s and Dr. Sarah Ballantyne of the Paleo Mom! This veggie blend contains 11 different kinds of organic fruits and veggies.” – Michelle, Unbound Wellness. Check out Michelle’s recipe for collagen veggie fat bombs!
