Mini-Review: Paleo Indulgences by Tammy Credicott

I recently acquired a large selection of new paleo and gluten-free cookbooks (thanks to Victory Belt Publishing!).  I do not have time to thoroughly review them all (I normally like to make 4-6 recipes from a cookbook before writing a comprehensive review); but at the same time, I really want to provide my opinions on these books to those of you trying to figure out which paleo cookbook will give you the most bang for your buck.  I have settled on providing mini-reviews.  This is the first of seven mini-reviews that I will be posting over the next 3 -4 weeks.

 Paleo Indulgences by Tammy Credicott, the blogger behind, is a cookbook designed to help you satisfy those cravings for your old favorite foods without falling off the paleo bandwagon.  The book contains 87 recipes in 5 categories:

  • The Bakery (which includes recipes for muffins, cinnamon swirl rolls, breads, tarts, cakes, frostings, whoopee pies, cookies, graham crackers, brownies and even cheesecake)
  • Today’s Specials (which includes recipes for crackers, granola bars, fruit dip and fruit jerky)
  • Restaurant Recreations (which includes recipes for pancakes, classic appetizers like onion dip, sweet potato fries, onion rings, wings, chili, burgers, fish sticks, pizza, classic Asian dishes, and tacos)
  • The Candy Counter (which includes recipes for toffee caramels, peppermint creams, almond o’ joys, and marshmallows)
  • The Ice Cream Shop (which includes recipes for mint-chip ice cream, orange creamsicle ice cream and chocolate magic shell topping).

These recipes look amazing!  And that’s not just the beautiful photography talking.  The recipes all use simple ingredients that are standard in any paleo pantry; such as: almond flour, arrowroot flour, coconut flour, hazelnut flour, walnut meal, tapioca starch, assorted nuts, seeds and dried fruit, coconut oil, palm shortening, honey and maple syrup.  Taking a page from Eat Like a Dinosaur, the recipes are labelled for the four common allergens that are still included in the paleo (or primal) diet: dairy (a primal ingredient; only 3 recipes contain dairy products), eggs, tree nuts and fish/shellfish.  The recipes have easy to follow and thorough directions and are prefaced by a nice little introduction.  A short introductory chapter guides you through the paleo basics and explains some of the ingredients used.  A very helpful shopping guide is included as an appendix to help you source ingredients as well.

Paleo Indulgences has a very specific audience:  those who feel that a standard paleo diet is too restrictive, who feel the need for the occasional indulgence, and who need to know that they can still eat their favorite foods, even if they are reinvented somewhat.  This book will also be very valuable for parents who want to make paleo treats for their kids or who have kids who feel self-conscious about the way they eat.  At my house, this book will definitely be coming out frequently as the holiday season approaches and my need for amazing cookie recipes increases!




I just bought this cookbook and my family has loved everything I have made. They are slowly transition from SAD to Paleo and this cookbook has helped out immensely! My daughter loves the one minute chocolate cake, my son raved about the cincinnati chili, and tonight we are having mandarin chicken. Great cookbook for transitioning and I would definitely recommend it!
