I’m just catching up with your podcasts. Love them! They are keeping me company every night while I am doing kitchen clean up and preparing lunches after the kids go to bed. I felt compelled to comment because the reaction you described your daughter having after she ate candy is the exact same reaction my daughter has. She is also 5 and just started Kindergarten. I do suspect some immune issues since it runs in the family and she was one of those very, very colicky babies with severe reflux, etc. I am not a scientist, but an avid researcher and I have been able to figure out that her reaction is due to petroleum in her diet (artificial color, flavor and preservatives, whether in the food or the packaging) that she is not metabolizing. As long as these items are out, she is very sweet, calm and reasonable. Possibly, children experience the same types of behavioral issues if they are not metabolizing a substance, and that it is not particular to petroleum (I have heard of gluten causing these same types of behaviors). However, I just wanted to throw it out there because I know that with her, although we limit sugar in general, just sweets minus the petroleum does not have the same effect. I know that there have been studies in the UK that are starting to link these petroleum substances to behavioral changes in all children. I find it very disconcerting that there are probably thousands of children who are being medicated for ADD and ADHD when it is really only petroleum or another food that it at the root of their problem.

Thank you so much for your comment! My daughter was the same way. Colicky for a year (which then merged into early toddler tantrums), very bed reflux (although no doctor ever thought it was bad enough to treat, even though she was still spitting up at three years old!). We actually figured out that she was sensitive to food dyes very early on. And you’re right. Her reaction to a homemade paleo cookie is completely fine as long as she doesn’t overdo it. There seems to be a very strong link between food dyes and ADD/ADHD type behaviors (and gluten and casein sensitivity). I think this is fairly well acknowledged in the autistic spectrum disorder community and is starting to be more broadly understood.
